The Longest Night – A Special and Moving Event by the Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization
The Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization hosted a special evening of conversation with an inspiring alumnus – Eshkol Nevo, the award-winning Israeli author. The event took place at the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Tel Aviv University, in the presence of Dafna Meitar Nechmad, Chairwoman of the Tel Aviv University (TAU) Board of Governors and alumna of the Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University, and Prof. Oded Lipschits, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Tel Aviv University.
The evening opened with a scholarship award ceremony, made possible through a donation from Sano, in memory of Sergeant Adi Gruman, the daughter of Anat and Asaf Gruman, who was killed in action on October 7. The scholarship was awarded to a Tel Aviv University student who serves as a reserve combat soldier.
The ceremony was followed by a one-on-one conversation between Meytal Vaizberg, Globes journalist, writer, and content creator, who studied Literature at the Faculty of Humanities, Tel Aviv University, and Eshkol Nevo, an award-winning Israeli author, creative writing instructor, and alumnus of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Tel Aviv University. The discussion marked the publication of Nevo's new book, The Longest Night.
Sigalit Ben Hayoun, Head of the Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization, said:
"The scholarship awarded this evening is dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Adi Gruman, a combat soldier in Battalion 414, who was killed in action on October 7 at the age of 19. We extend our deepest condolences to her family.
The scholarship has been awarded to Avia Yanai, who has just completed her first year of Biology studies at the Faculty of Life Sciences. Following the events of October 7, she changed her personal plans and volunteered for reserve duty in Battalion 419, a mixed light infantry battalion operating under the Home Front Command.
This scholarship is made possible through the generous contribution of Sano, where Adi's father, Assaf Gruman, is employed. The donation is part of a broader initiative by the company, through which ten scholarships were awarded this year to students serving in the reserve forces, in recognition of their dedication, contribution, and commitment to Israeli society. We would like to thank Tamar Landsberg, Vice President of Marketing, and the Landsberg family for their generous support.
In the reality Israel has faced in recent years, the decision to commemorate the memory of Corporal Adi Gruman through support for reserve soldiers and the next generation of students carries profound significance—a message of continuity, mutual responsibility, and hope."
